Jean-François Prost est un artiste diplômé en design de l’environnement à l’UQAM (Montréal) et en architecture à l’université Carleton (Ottawa). Il s’intéresse aux nouveaux territoires urbains de recherche se situant en marge des zones habituellement investies par l’intervention artistique et l’aménagement : lieux négligés, indéterminés autant que ceux sur-contrôlés, aseptisés et sans spécificité apparente. Sa démarche consiste à penser et questionner la ville, l’aménagement, l’architecture et la matière urbaine, de manière non-disciplinaire, par de nouvelles approches, des démarches et des pratiques émanant des arts visuels. Combinant interventions urbaines, installations et manœuvres, il poursuit une réflexion critique sur nos rapports à l’espace, aux lieux et aux autres.
Les actions proposées abordent la notion de l'art à titre, en premier lieu, d'acte de résistance, d'état d'esprit, de dispositif pour énoncer ou échanger les idées. Dans ces lieux publics abandonnés ou non utilisés, son travail vient réactiver et promouvoir l'engagement social, et défendre la présence de l'art au-delà de quelques lieux privilégiés : l'art partout, à tout moment.
Depuis 1998, son travail individuel, en duo et en collaboration avec l’atelier d’exploration urbaine Syn- (co-fondé en 2000) a été présenté par de nombreuses galeries et à divers événements internationaux : Liverpool Biennial 2006 - International Festival of Contemporary Art, 1re Biennale d’architecture internationale de Rotterdam, au CCA (Centre Canadien d’Architecture) à Montréal et à la 3e Manif d’art de Québec. Sa recherche en cours fera l’objet d’une série d’interventions-expositions en 2007-08 dans les villes de Paris, Miami et à Québec. Depuis plusieurs années, il siège au Conseil d’administration de DARE-DARE centre d’art multidisciplinaire avec lequel il a récemment coordonné une table ronde événementielle sur le thème de l’art public.

Jean-François Prost is an Montreal-based artist who has studied architecture (Carleton University); his keen interest in new urban research territories on the fringe of areas rarely explored by artistic intervention and aménagement – neglected, undetermined spaces, and those overcontrolled, sterile, with no apparent specificity – has brought him to rethink and question the city, architecture and urban material in a non-disciplinary way, with new approaches and practices sprung from the visual arts. Combining installation work and urban intervention, his research explores our ties to space and to others. He is preoccupied with the city of today, be it generic, historical or shrinking...
In Prost's work, art is an act of resistance, a state of mind, a device to enunciate and exchange ideas. Within the abandoned/unused public spaces, it activates and promotes social engagement, defends the presence of art everywhere and at anytime.
Since 1998, his individual, duo and collaborative work with SYN- urban exploration workshop has been shown by many galleries, and at international events: 3rd Montreal Biennale, 1st International Architecture Biennial in Rotterdam, and at the Canadian Centre for Architecture. His current research will be the subject of a series of performance/exhibits in 2006-07 in the cities of Ottawa-Gatineau, Liverpool and Miami. Long-time member of the Board of Directors of Montreal's DARE-DARE multidisplinary art center, he recently curated a conference event on public art.
